The Team GO Rocket Takeover is this week, and today we’re taking a look at how to defeat Giovanni during this November 2022 event.
Taking place today, Nov. 14 until Thursday, Nov. 17, the event includes new shiny Pokémon, as well as access to Shadow Mewtwo.
How to Defeat Team Go Rocket Leader Giovanni November 2022
The Team GO Rocket Takeover event is this week. Along with more Team GO Rocket Grunts appearing in the wild, the event also has some exclusive features as well.
Most importantly, Trainers should remember that they can use a Charged TM to get Shadow Pokémon to forget the attack Frustration, so be sure to keep those TM’s handy!
Additionally, Rocket Leader Giovanni is making his return during this event, as he’s bringing Shadow Mewtwo along for the ride. Trainers who find and defeat Giovanni will be given a chance to catch Shadow Mewtwo.

Concerning the Rocket Leaders’ Teams, they are as follows:
Arlo’s Team:
- Mawile
- Charizard, Salamence or Staraptor
- Dragonite, Granbull or Scizor
Cliff’s Team:
- Machop
- Pinsir, Crobat or Amoonguss
- Aerodactyl, Tyranitar or Camerupt
Sierra’s Team:
- Sableye
- Flygon, Caturne or Honchkrow
- Snorlax, Houndoom or Cradily
(Note that after defeating these Leaders, Sableye, Machop and Mawile all have a chance to be shiny.)
Giovanni’s Team
- Persian
- Nidoqueen, Steelix or Rhyperior
- Mewtwo
For Giovanni, you’re going to want a strong Fighting-Type for Persian.
Use one of the following Pokémon and Fast/Charge Moves:
- Conkeldurr: Counter & Focus Blast
- Hariyama: Counter & Aura Sphere
- Lucario: Counter & Aura Sphere
- Machamp: Counter & Dynamic Punch
- Breloom: Counter & Dynamic Punch
For his second Pokémon, Giovanni will either have a Nidoqueen, a Steelix or a Rhyperior.
For Nidoqueen, the Pokémon is weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic and Water-Type attacks. Use the following Pokémon and their Fast/Charge moves:
- Mewtwo: Psycho Cut & Psychic/Psystrike
- Kyogre: Waterfall & Surf
- Garchomp: Mud Shot & Earthquake
- Glaceon: Ice Shard & Avalanche
- Galarian Darmanitan: Ice Fang & Avalanche
For Steelix, it’s weak to Fighting, Fire, Ground and Water. Use the following:
- Conkeldurr: Counter & Dynamic Punch
- Darmanitan: Fire Fang & Overheat
- Reshiram: Fire Fang & Overheat
- Swampert: Water Gun & Hydro Cannon
- Entei: Fire Fang & Overheat
For Rhyperior, its weak to Grass and Water. It is also week to Fighting, Ground, Ice and Steel.
Use the following Pokémon and their respective moves:
- Torterra: Razor Leaf & Frenzy Plant
- Kyogre: Waterfall & Surf
- Empoleon: Waterfall & Hydro Cannon
- Zarude: Vine Whip & Power Whip
- Swampert: Mud Shot & Hydro Cannon
Finally, for Mewtwo, the Psychic-Type is weak to Bug, Dark and Ghost-Type attacks. Use any of the following and their respective moves:
- Darkrai: Snarl & Dark Pulse
- Hydreigon: Bite & Brutal Swing
- Chandelure: Hex & Shadow Ball
- Hoopa: Astonish & Shadow Ball
- Zarude Bite & Dark Pulse
A team of Conkeldurr, Kyogre and Hydreigon is your best bet, but if you don’t have this available you will likely need to experiment. Additionally, you can find Giovanni after obtaining the Super Rocket Radar while completing the new Special Research.
Special Research Tasks to Fight and Defeat Giovanni
Tasks for the Special Research include the following tasks and rewards.
Step One:
- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts: Hyper Potion x10
- Catch 4 Shadow Pokémon: PokéBall x10
- Purify 2 Shadow Pokémon: Pinap Berry x10
Rewards: 2000 XP, Great Ball x15, Rocket Radar
Step Two:
- Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Arlo: 1500 XP
- Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Cliff: 1500 XP
- Defeat the Team Go Rocket Leader Sierra: 1500 XP
Rewards: 2500 XP, 1000 Stardust, Super Rocket Radar
Step Three:
- Find the Team GO Rocket Boss: Max Potion x5
- Battle the Team GO Rocket Boss: Ultra Ball x20
- Defeat the Team GO Rocket Boss: Max Revive x5
Rewards: 3000 XP, one Lucky Egg, Golden Razz Berry x2
Step Four:
- Claim Reward! 2500 XP (This is all three slots).
Rewards: 5000 xp, 2500 Stardust, Silver Pinap Berry.
Additionally, remember that Shiny Pawniard is now available in 12km eggs. You can obtain these Eggs if you have an extra slot open in your Egg section and you defeat a Team GO Rocket Leader.
