Festival of Lights Arrives in Pokémon GO: What to Expect From This Event

Trainers, the Festival of Lights is arriving to Pokémon GO! Not only is this event premiering Morelull for the first time in POGO, but more surprises are arriving as well.

Taking place between Friday, Oct. 14 at 10:00 a.m. local time to Monday, Oct. 17 at 8:00 p.m. local time, the event will bring different spawns, bonuses and more.

Festival of Lights 2022 Arrives to Pokémon GO

According to the Pokémon GO Live page, Morellul and Shiinotic will be making their debut within the game. Trainers will be able to catch Morelull and then use fifty candies to evolve it into Shiinotic. Additionally, Pokémon appearing on the in-game map at night will be lit up with a gold light shimmering beneath them.

Event Bonuses

  • Increased chance of encountering shiny Chinchou
  • 2x XP for catching Pokémon
  • 2x Candy for catching Pokémon
  • Incense activated during the event will last for two hours.

Pokémon in the Wild

During this event, the following Pokémon will appear in the wild with more frequency (asterisk means they have a chance to be shiny): Pikachu*, Vulpix*, Magnemite*, Chinchou*, Litwick, Litleo*, Helioptile, Dedenne, Morelull.

Rare encounters include Galarian Ponyta* and Togedemaru.

Incense Pokémon

Along with wild encounters, trainers will also encounter different Pokémon using incense.

This includes: Alolan Geodude*, Blitzle*, Darumaka*, Litwick, Dedenne, Morelull.

Rare spawns for incense include Galarian Ponyta* and Galarian Darumaka*.

Raid Battles

Of course, Raids will also change during this event. According to sources, the list is as follows.

  • One-Star Raids: G. Ponyta*, Darumaka*, Dedenne and Morelull
  • Three-Star Raids: Alolan Raichu*, G. Weezing*, Mawile*, Hisuian Braviary*
  • Five-Star Raids: Xerneas

Field Research Task Encounters and Timed Research

Concerning spawns, the last group involves Field Research task encounters. Which features:
G. Ponyta*, Electabuzz*, Magmar*, Chinchou*, Blitzle*, Dedenne and Morelull.

Along with different spawns and encounters, the event also includes new Timed Research. Trainers who complete the research will be able to earn the Sparkler Pose, where their avatar will hold a lit sparkler. Event themed stickers will also be available by spinning PokéStops, opening gifts and purchasing the in-game shop.

Festival of Lights: A Great Time to Play

The fact alone that this event includes 2x Catch XP is enough to get excited. With Excellent Throws still netting 1000 XP, this could be a great event for trainers to get some much needed XP. It’s also fantastic that this coincides with Litwick Community Day, making for some potentially massive XP gains.

According to HomeSliceHenry, Shiinotic isn’t that great for PVP, though a new Fast Move from Niantic may change this. It’s great to see Hisuian Braviary back in raids, as that’s a fun shiny, but overall, it’s the 2x Catch XP that makes this event a winner.
